Angela Bowen: One Woman’s Passionate Pursuits
Stories exploring the complexity of black women’s lives are rarely
told; black feminists are seldom heard or seen; and black lesbians are
practically invisible. We seldom see how the intersections of race, class,
gender, age and sexuality manifests in one women’s life. How did Bowen keep her
passions alive, even in the face of poverty and bigotry, and how have her
decisions affected the lives of those closest to her?
DANCING
“Dance turned my world from grey to technicolor.”
TEACHING
“From the time I was a little girl, my mother always told me,
“What’s the use of learning something if you can’t pass it along, and that has been with me my whole life long.”
ACTIVISM
“I see my biggest function as an advocate. “I am a black, lesbian, feminist, writer, activist.
I see all of these as equal functions.”
SCHOLAR
“I love my students…all of them.
Even the ones who exasperate me and whom I exasperate.”
